Samuel Bourne (1834–1912) was a bank employee with a passion for photography who left England for India in 1863. He remained there for seven years, until 1870. Traveling across the subcontinent, he organized several expeditions to the Himalayas, Kashmir, and the source of the Ganges. In partnership with Charles Shepherd, he established the Bourne & Shepherd photography studio in Simla in 1863.
