Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746–1827) was a Swiss educator and pioneer of modern, child-centered education.
Although Pestalozzi never used photography himself, his methods later inspired its use in classrooms, encouraging learning through experience and direct observation.
Pestalozzi stereo cards offered series depicting landscapes, trades, and practical knowledge for the education of young learners.
Who are we?
La Valise Arlésienne
Between gallery and cabinet of curiosities, “La Valise Arlésienne” reveals its photographic treasures.
Taken from this suitcase, these carefully selected curiosities are destined for new journeys.
Located at 8 rue du Docteur Fanton in Arles, the world capital of Photography, we offer original prints from the 19th and 20th centuries, cameras and folding cameras, daguerreotypes… Unusual objects illustrating discoveries and advances in photography, and lost images searching for a reinvented story or orphaned collections.
Whether you are a collector or simply drawn to a particular object, it is the rediscovered memory of photographic pieces that will set off again and continue their story.
La Valise Arlésienne invites you on a journey through time via the stories carried by photographic objects —
a slow or swift pause among mirrors that remember and other travelling cameras.
