In 1867, Joseph Bourgeois-Aîné opened a colour shop in Paris, along with a factory in Montreuil where he produced the first so-called “non-dangerous” colours intended for art schools.
He later offered his colours for photographic retouching.

Box showing traces of woodworm, now stabilised.
All original accessories have been used.

AND MORE…
A crystoleum is a painted photograph mounted under glass.
An albumen print is glued to a concave glass; the paper backing of the print is then rubbed away, leaving the image, which is hand-coloured with oil paint.
This extremely costly process was used for a short period between 1880 and 1910.

Who are we?

La Valise Arlésienne

Somewhere between a gallery and a cabinet of curiosities, La Valise Arlésienne reveals its photographic treasures. Taken from this suitcase, these carefully selected curiosities are destined for new journeys.

Located at 8 rue du Docteur Fanton in Arles, the world capital of Photography, we offer original 19th- and 20th-century prints, field and folding cameras, daguerreotypes… Unusual objects bearing witness to the discoveries and advances of photography, and lost images seeking a reinvented story or orphaned collections.

Whether you are a collector or simply moved by a sudden fascination, it is the unearthed memory of photographic objects that will set off again and continue its story.

La Valise Arlésienne invites you on a journey through time through the stories of photographic objects. A slow or quick pause among mirrors that remember and other traveling cameras.

Feel free to contact us with any request or visit us in our Arles gallery. All our objects and prints are authentic and from their original period and may therefore show imperfections due to their age. Major defects are mentioned in the description and shown in the presentation photos.
